Infertility: Looking for Answers in a Sea of Unknowns
Why is infertility so often surrounded by silence, stigma, and misunderstanding?
Infertility is inherently complex, spanning multiple research disciplines. It is a profoundly personal and difficult journey. While scientific advancements continue, an individual’s diagnosis may remain medically undefined or not properly communicated by professionals. Amidst so many unknowns, women are isolated. While many women undergo this journey, it is hard to find a constructive outlet to share their experiences and support others.
The 72 Fund seeks to foster “natural” conversations—in a space where stigma is absent.
Facts:
-
Infertility affects one in six adults globally; the prevalence could be higher due to the complexity and criteria required for diagnostic testing.
-
Infertility is defined as the inability to conceive after 12 months of trying, or after six months for those over the age of 35.
-
A range of medical interventions and assisted reproductive technologies address infertility. In vitro fertilization (IVF), a common method involving extra-corporeal fertilization and embryo implantation, has resulted in many successful pregnancies but carries significant physical, emotional, and financial challenges.
-
Other treatments include ovulation-stimulating drugs, surgery for structural anomalies, and gamete or embryo donation. Emerging options like fertility preservation also broaden the scope.
-
Selecting the optimal treatment requires a comprehensive, individualized approach, considering the patient’s medical profile, age, specific cause of infertility, and personal circumstances, emphasizing evidence-based clinical decisions.
